The injury in question is serious

In order to qualify for one-off compensation, you must have sustained serious injury as a result of the violent crime in question. Such injury may be physical or mental, or a combination of both. Examples of serious injury are those that have lasting serious consequences, such as a disfiguring scar or the loss of an eye. An injury is also serious if you take a long time to recover or you are unable to work for an extended period of time.

Serious mental injury includes agoraphobia or enduring sleep problems. In determining whether an injury is serious, the Fund looks at whether you are being treated for it. As to sex crimes and armed robbery, the Fund simply assumes serious mental injury, even if you are not receiving treatment for it.

The Fund works with medical advisors who are able to establish instances of serious injury, who draw on medical data from the file or additional information from consulting doctors. They do not carry out any physical examinations. These medical advisors have to date assessed many injuries and compiled them in an Injury List. This list contains the most common injuries together with the amount of the corresponding compensation. See also the ‘Download information’ tab.
