The Violent Offences Compensation Fund is an independent organisation founded in 1976 following the enactment of the Violent Offences Compensation Fund Act [Wet Schadefonds Geweldsmisdrijven]. The Fund is a division of the Ministry of Justice and is financed by general tax revenues. It employs over 60 people. Its office is in Rijswijk.
The Fund provides financial support to victims of violent crimes that result in serious injury. Examples of such crimes include violent theft, mugging, threat with a weapon, assault and rape, as well as domestic violence, stalking and incest.
The Fund provides one-off compensation for the mental suffering inflicted on victims (ie non-economic damages) as well as for example medical costs and loss of income.
